Staff Sergeant Justin J. Asher
Marine Detachment Naval School of Music
Staff Sergeant Asher was born on September 15, 1992, in Waukesha, WI. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 2017. After completing recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, NC and Marine Combat Training at Camp LeJeune, NC, he reported to MCAS Miramar, CA as a Military Occupational Specialty of 5524 Musician.

In April 2018, Private First Class Asher was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3d MAW) Band in San Diego, CA for duty as a Clarinet Instrumentalist. While there, he was promoted to Lance Corporal in June 2018, Corporal in June 2019, and Sergeant in December 2020. During his tour, Sergeant Asher performed with the 3d MAW Ceremonial Band, Concert Band, and Clarinet Quintet for audiences across the continental United States. Additionally, he served in the billets of Platoon Guide, Administration Chief, Information Systems Coordinator, and Clarinet Section Leader, aiding in the development of other clarinet instrumentalists in the unit.

In March 2023, Sergeant Asher received orders to his current assignment at Marine Detachment, Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA to serve as the Clarinet Instructor. While there, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant in August 2024. Prior to executing his orders, he completed the Facilitating Learning Experiences course in February 2023 and earned the BMOS of 0951 Formal Schools Instructor in April 2023. SSgt Asher also fulfills the duties of Unit Career Counselor and Unit Transition Coordinator.

SSgt Asher’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance and a Master of Music degree in Clarinet Performance.
