Sergeant Joshua D. L. Newby
Marine Detachment Naval School of Music
Sergeant Joshua Newby was born on January 10, 1996, in Atlanta, GA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in June of 2019. Following Recruit Training at Parris Island Recruit Depot and Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, he reported to the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA for “A” School training as a Basic Musician, and earned the Military Occupation Specialty of 5524 Musician as an accelerated student.

Following completion of the Basic Music Course, Lance Corporal Newby was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3D MAW) Band, Miramar, California. While there, he was promoted to Corporal in 2021 and Sergeant in 2022. During his tour, Sergeant Newby performed as a Bugler and Trumpet instrumentalist with the Ceremonial Band, Concert Band, Brass Quintet, and Trumpet ensemble for virtual and live audiences across the contiguous United States including performances for former Secretary of Defense General James N. Mattis, and former Vice President Mike Pence. Additionally, he served in the billets of Fiscal Chief, DTS Clerk, and Trumpet Section Leader, aiding in the development of other Trumpet Instrumentalists in the unit.

Following a successful tour of duty with the 3D MAW Band, Sgt Newby was selected to attend the Unit Leader Course at the Naval School of Music. Upon completing the Unit Leader Course, Sgt Newby was retained and placed on staff as the Trumpet Instrumental Instructor. While there, he completed the Navy Instructor Training Course in July 2023 and earned the BMOS of 0951 Formal Schools Instructor. Sergeant Newby also fulfills the duties of Antiterrorism Representative, Faculty Advisor, and SMP Representative.

He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Georgia State University.
