Gunnery Sergeant Michael A. Cook
Marine Detachment Naval School of Music
Gunnery Sergeant Cook enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 2011 and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina with Kilo Company, Third Recruit Training Battalion. He reported to the School of Infantry, Camp Geiger, North Carolina for Marine Combat Training in January 2012.



In February 2012, Private First Class Cook was assigned to Marine Detachment, Naval School of Music, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia. While in attendance he completed the Music Basic Course, earned MOS 5524 and 5547, and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal in May 2012.



In August 2012, Lance Corporal Cook reported for duty to Marine Forces Reserve Band, New Orleans, Louisiana, where he served as a tuba and sousaphone instrumentalist and an audio technician. Lance Corporal Cook was promoted to the rank of Corporal in August 2013. In July 2014, Corporal Cook was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Cook attended the Sound Reinforcement Technician Course at Naval School of Music, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia in October 2014. In November 2014, Sergeant Cook returned to the Marine Forces Reserve Band, where he served as the unit's Small Ensemble Leader, Squad Leader, and Command Physical Training Representative.



In August 2016, Sergeant Cook reported for duty to III Marine Expeditionary Force Band, Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, where he served as the unit's Small Ensemble Leader, Arranging Chief, Squad Leader, and Training NCO. Sergeant Cook was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in October 2018.



In January 2019, Staff Sergeant Cook attended Drill Instructor School aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, before being assigned to Company F, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, in May 2019. Staff Sergeant Cook served as a Drill Instructor and the Recruit Training Regiment Narrator until being selected to attend the Musician Unit Leader Course at the Naval School of Music, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia, in January 2022.



After graduating in August 2022, Staff Sergeant Cook reported to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, where he served as Enlisted Conductor. In February 2023, Staff Sergeant Cook was selected among the first to earn MOS 5522, Production Manager, before being promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in May 2024. In September 2024, he reported to Marine Detachment, Naval School of Music, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia, where he currently serves as Production Manager and Live Production Technician Course Supervisor.



Gunnery Sergeant Cook’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Production from the Los Angeles Film School.
