Gunnery Sergeant William Fariss
Quantico Marine Band
GySgt Fariss enlisted in the Marine Corps during his senior year at Daleville High School in Daleville, Alabama and shipped to Parris Island, South Carolina for recruit training in 2004. In 2005, LCpl Fariss would attend and complete MOS training at the Basic Music Course in Virginia Beach, VA and arrive in Cherry Point, North Carolina for his first assignment. While assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, he would be promoted to the rank of Sergeant and fill billets as library clerk and administration NCO, and lead his first ceremonies and parades as NCO Drum Major.
, 1985, in Long Branch, New Jersey to parents that were in an active-duty Army Band in Ft. Monmouth. He and his family would spend three years in Germany while his father was assigned to the Army band in Frankfurt. His father would then get orders to Fort Rucker, Alabama where he would retire with his family.thGySgt Fariss was born October 20
                Sgt Fariss would receive orders to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band in Miramar, California in 2008. During his time there, he would serve as Sergeant of the Guard, supply chief, section leader, brass band leader, and platoon sergeant. In 2010, he would deploy to Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force where he would serve as watch shift leader. Upon return, the newly promoted SSgt Fariss would serve as Acting Drum Major of the 3rd MAW Band before being selected for recruiting duty.
                SSgt Fariss served successfully as a recruiter for Recruiting Substation Southaven, Mississippi for two and a half years before being accepted in 2017 to the Unit Leader Course at the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach. Upon graduating, he was again assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band in Cherry Point, North Carolina where he served as platoon sergeant, before being selected for the MOS of Drum Major and becoming the Drum Major for the 2nd MAW Band.
                In late 2019, he was given orders to the Naval School of Music where he served primarily as the Drum Major instructor. SSgt Fariss also filled several collateral duties such as Detachment GySgt, Platoon Sergeant, and IT support. During his time at the School of Music, he had the opportunity to fill a three-month internship at the NASA Langley Research Center.
GySgt Fariss was selected and promoted to his current rank in April 2024, whereupon he received and executed orders to the Quantico Marine Band where he has served as the Drum Major since August 2024. He and his wife Jennifer have one son, Liam. His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, 4th award, Good Conduct medal 5th award, Navy Unit Commendation 2nd award, and Meritorious Unit Commendation.
