Master Sergeant Wurts is a native of San Diego, California and joined the Marine Corps in October of 1998. Following Recruit Training, Marine Combat Training and the Basic Music Course at the Naval School of Music he earned the primary MOS of 5541, Trumpet Instrumentalist.

In August 1999, LCpl Wurts reported to the First Marine Division Band at Camp Pendleton, California where he served as an instrumentalist, administration clerk and assistant Drum Major. During this tour he earned the additional MOS’s of Range Coach and Primary Marksmanship Instructor. While there he was promoted to Corporal and later to Sergeant. In February 2003 he deployed in support of operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom where he served as Sergeant of the Guard and machine gun team leader.

In January 2004 Sergeant Wurts reported to Marine Band San Diego, San Diego, CA where he served as an instrumentalist, administration chief, Platoon Sergeant, assistant Drum Major and acting Drum Major. Also during this tour he earned the additional MOS of Martial Arts Instructor and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.    

Following completion of intermediate training at the Naval School of Music, Staff Sergeant Wurts reported to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band aboard MCAS Miramar in May of 2008 as an instrumentalist and then earned the position of Drum Major and was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

In May of 2011 he joined the Marine Detachment, Naval School of Music as the Detachment Gunnery Sergeant and Platoon Sergeant.

Returning to Marine Band San Diego in 2015 Gunnery Sergeant Wurts served as the Drum Major until his promotion to Master Sergeant and transfer to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band as the Bandmaster in June of 2018.

In March of 2020 MSgt Wurts reported to Communication Directorate, Headquarters Marine Corps where he served as the Instrumental Assignments / Operations Chief for Marine Corps Fleet Music and later transitioned to his current billet of Fleet Music Outreach Coordinator.
